4)Why does KP CORE have KP in its name?
a.Camille: CORE is Community Outreach to Realize Empowerment. If we dont have KP in it, then we wouldnt have people in KP, its not an auxiliary org but with CORE, STAR and KP, they are all integral to making KP work, the students they outreach to, that we outreach to are the future leaders of KP. Thats why KP is in its name; we are in this together to reach a goal. Like in our mission statement, equityprovides social safe space for students which doesnt apply to us but also applies to high school students. Also, to educate UCSD and greater san Diego community applies not just to us but also to high school students
b.Angie: Re-iterate what Camille said about KPs mission statement about educating San Diego community about Pilipin@ culture, its to go out to communities where counselors act as gate-keepers that tell students where they can or cannot go. I think KP CORE is amazing because they do work counselors arent doing because of bigotry, racism or pure ignorance. When CORE started a few years ago, it was to bring people in an empower them. Their constitution is to provide access to higher education, which is in line with KP and the discussion we had last week was good and this obvious thing about how our VC External should be a part of CORE was discussed, KP is a good counterpart to CORE and CORE helps keep KP idealistic but realistic.
c.Camille: A way ensure that CORE, STAR and KP succeed as a collective is to communicate with each other. Communication is key. I discussed this with STAR, CORE and KP members, something that was actually Kevins idea which was to have meetings together, tried to implement that with STAR/CORE/Board retreats but didnt fall through, if we know what each other is doing we can reach our highest potential as far as access and retention are concerned. It might be hard but its all about pre-planning then CORE and STAR have the potential to shine more so than they do now.
d.Angie: Last week CORE came to board meeting to express their concerns about CORE/Board dynamics. I have two diagrams, one with an umbrella that is KP with CORE and STAR under the umbrella versus an umbrella where the fabric of the umbrella was STAR/CORE and the handle was KP. Personally, I would like to see the second umbrella of the STAR and CORE being the fabric of the umbrella. What if we decide to use the energy put towards STAR and put that towards CORE. Tangent, enCORE sounds super cool, like a Fusion for high school students, plus the scholarship is triply cool. Its all about the placement of responsibilities and as chair, I would work to keep communication open, like what can KP do for CORE and how can CORE can help the ideas of KP.
