I ride *every single lead vocal* to make sure that words can be heard clearly, notably the ends of verses and words with soft consonants...
It comes down to the dynamic nature of the performance. I mean, you adjust every *other* instrument via EQ/Comp/Gate/Etc. Why would you not clean up the vocal?
Also, if you're calling riding a last resort, but slapping it in a compressor, you don't understand that mixing is another performance in and of itself. Real hands did the rides.

When it comes to vocals, vocal riding is very important so please don't forget to apply this to all your mixes.

Please if you could tell us what effect you have used in this vocal or what have u done with the dry vocal on this one.?? please

waves has a very cool vocal rider plugin that does all the automation for you!

It`s funny that u can actually alter the vocal dynamics like that. It`s as if the singer was performing like that on purpose during the recording process itself %)

Wow. You made that easy. Thanks again!!
you are amazing
but shouldn't the vocalist's talant eliminate the need for you to do so much
are you working to overcome faulty equipment or a faulty vocalist?

@Splendorious Not trying to overcome anything. This is standard proceedure for studio mixing. No singer, no matter HOW consistent will track vocals where every word and sound is as perfectly audible as you would like it after all the other tracks are recorded. That's part of studio work, to make everything heard that needs to be heard.

Isn't automating the volume a last resort? I have heard it is. Would you recomend going into the comp. gain and get into that rather than a vol. auto?

@wantit1 Not a last resort. Critical part of the process. Just last step to a great vocal. Compression won't make it perfect.
