YWCA of Asheville Solar Panel Dedication

City Councilman Brownie Newman reading the following proclamation at the YWCA of Asheville's Solar Panel Dedication Event. http://www.ywcaofasheville.org.

WHEREAS, the YWCA has been a leader in the community in eliminating racism, a champion for womens empowerment, and is now a pioneer for clean renewable energy through its recent solar panel installation; and

WHEREAS, the YWCA will be the Asheville areas first solar powered gym, and the panels will provide more than 80% of the YWCAs hot water for the pool, kitchen, laundry, and showers; and

WHEREAS, the YWCA is committed to being a good steward of our natural resources and it will be a visible example to the thousands of children and families who we serve annually about the opportunity to use clean, renewable energy; and

WHEREAS, this solar energy system will prevent the release of 18 tons of carbon pollution per year, and is the equivalent of taking seven cars off the highway or planting 4200 trees; and

WHEREAS, YWCA Solar Project is in memory of Ske Bonsike, a wonderful teacher and example of conservation, the lead gift for the project was given by the William and Frances Beattie Foundation, and the lead corporate gift was from Progress Energy.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, MAYOR TERRY M. BELLAMY, Mayor of the City of Asheville, North Carolina, do hereby proclaim April 22, 2009 as YWCA SOLAR PANEL DEDICATION DAY in Asheville and express my admiration for the work of YWCA for their leadership in energy independence.
