Just finished installing openSUSE 11 to my Asus Eee PC 701 4G to a 8Gb SDHC card (4Gb partition). No swap, system has 2Gb of RAM. XP Pro is installed to my internal drive, using the bios to boot my OS choice.

My fail at boot looks like it tries to mount sdb1 which at install was the drive openSUSE was installed to. Now on boot its sda1. Now that I can pause it, I can see its not expecting NTFS. Something to fix.

Update: It was cause the mbr was botched on my SSD while installing things. Fixed the mbr, fail is gone now.

I set the card reader as a fixed drive in XP so I could read the other 4gb as FAT32 so both OS can use it.

  • I finally got 11.1 happy on my 1000H; built eee-esod (on google code) and after installing MPlayer and MediaWrap, it does everything that Xandros couldn't manage.

If you don't mind changing the bios settings, you can make it natively boot and install grub from the SDHC.

  • Yes, but back then I didn't wait it to auto boot to the SDHC and that way I also didn't need a grub menu.

  • dude careful with your eee

does openSUSE work out of the box on the 701?

  • Heh, sounds like it landed pretty hard, wasn't that bad.

No, wireless, lan, acpi, fn keys need to be setup.

  • it really isn't that much. i paid more for my palm tx than my 701. people pay about that for some smart phones too.

and now they are even cheaper.

funny the way this guy tosses it around. love that. have dropped my from quite a few feet and was a-ok.

  • yes. use unetbootin. you can find instructions to make sd card persistent. very easy.

  • Wait so Can I boot an operating system off of my SHDC card? can I burn it an ISO file to a itto boot an OS?

  • My laptop model compaq c770TU and my SHDC 4gb. When I open quick boot (press F9 after power on), name SDHC card not appear. Does my SD slot is not support to boot? I try test plug Thumbdrive(256MB)and USB External HDD (20GB), both are appeared in quick boot. Is there a solution to make my sdhc to boot?

  • I agree its a super cheap laptop but still alot of Money.

  • You know what, If you install it on flash memory, before you know it, your SDHC is already burned out, because of the read/write cycles
