While other local governments struggle under the strain of crushing debt, one county in Colorado has NO long-term debt. The nearly 255,000 residents of Weld County, Colorado can thank elected officials, department heads and staff for being "good stewards" of taxpayer dollars; and county employees and elected officials can thank voters for holding them accountable. This demographically large (4000 square miles) Northeastern Colorado county manages to complete capital construction projects, pave roads and provide crucial services to residents without putting taxpayers into debt. And it does so without any sales tax and still maintains a $20 million emergency fund. Congratulations to Weld County, Colorado for winning the 2010 "Good Steward" award from the Independence Institute and Mothers Against Debt. If you know of a government entity at any level that should be considered for the "Good Steward" award, please contact COST@i2i.org.
You should also give credit to what got them out of debt, The Oil and Gas industry.... If other towns and citys would figure this out we could be way better off.
I live in Elbert and we are soon to be the next "Weld County"
