The Red Hill Creek in Hamilton, Ontario literally blew it's banks on July 26, 2009, after near-record rainfall inundated the area. Neighbourhoods downstream were affected by severe flooding and damage is being estimated in the millions of dollars.

This video was made about 2 hours after peak rainfall. If one notes the flat vegetation on the side of the creek the actual peak water level can be estimated.

Some critics of the recently completed Red Hill Valley Parkway are blaming the rerouting and containment of the creek as a cause, noting before construction the water would spill across the now reduced wetland area.

  • Nice footage! I'm a weather junkie. I will never forget that day and the Valentines Day 2007 snowstorm! I call BS on the amount of rain they say we had. 23mm thats just above 2cm and we get that easily in an average fall storm. Thunderstorms usually give 50-100mm. This was waaay more then that at least 150mm I'm banking on.

  • .....I have never seen rain like that day....I agree at least 150mm!

  • Thanks to everyone! The response to this video has been great and I think it shows the source of the water..............

  • this is why.... the redhill was originally supose to be built like burlington street, raised up so that they wouldn't have to redirect the red hill creek and have THIS FREAKING FLOOD!

  • Dah! Do you think they need a larger storm water storage tank for the in-fluent to the waste water treatment plant? No, Its better to restrict the flow the to the plant. Better yet, leave it like it is. It will created more jobs when the basements flood and people file law suits. We'll build this road twice, Yeah!! Hamilton Sucks! and stinks for good reason!
