I found this to be a very enjoyable book, but it's not really a practical advice book on how to live off the grid. At least not for someone who does not have a significant amount of capital to start off with. Nevertheless, I do find myself inspired by his story, and I wish him the best of luck.

Wood stoves really put out the smoke, and are very tricky to use. I cooked on a wood cook stove for over 6 years, so have a clue about it. All wood stoves put out an lot of smoke unless you have very dry wood and really know what you are doing, especially when starting the fire. Electric is better

Wood heat tends to be either too hot or too cold. We switched to 98% efficient propane gas wall unvented room heaters and really like them. You can back up to them to get warm, and the temp is even.
