Hi guys,

This is some brief footage of a heavy thunderstorm developing to the Northeast of my location. The storm was retrograde in movement, that is, from the ENE to WSW (this was due to the position of the low), and was moving very slowly (almost stationary). Though weakening when arriving in close proximity to the West Island, where I live, we were left with some decent periods of rainfall, thunder, lightning and some fairly gusty winds. In the East End of the island, however, the storm remained over the area for nearly two full hours while developing over the region - it was simply wonderful to watch, with the anvil developing so brightly overhead and spreading out for some distance. Hail was reported in that area, strong downdrafts as well as copious amounts of heavy rainfall.

Hope you like the video! There were plenty of lightning strikes present, but the camera didn't pick them up well due to the strikes being faint and some sunlight in the background. :( You can hear some soft rumbles of thunder and the wind (inflow pushing towards the storm) blowing steadily.

We've been short of t-storms this year so far, so I found this one pretty sweet. :) Though not over my area directly, I certainly had the honor of watching the clouds develop and swell until becoming this magnificent storm!

  • Great video! Glad to see new footage from you man!

  • Hi Nathan,

It felt so good seeing this storm in the distance, especially since it has been so quiet in terms of t-storm frequency! Hope for more large storms this Summer.

Thanks for watching! Did you hear about that huge Nebraska tornado?

  • WHat kind of clouds was it? Still Great video! 5/5 I'm also trying to be a meteorologist.

  • Hi grandpokebros1,

This is a cumulonimbus cloud (storm cloud) since there is a defined anvil (not seen in this video, unfortunately) at the top of the entire cloud mass. Cumulonimbus is a generally a collective term that defines a handful of stages in the latter part of storm development, but since the storm is entirely in its mature stage here, we then deem it the Cumulonimbus Incus.

I'm really glad to hear that you've a strong interest in meteorology! Thanks for the rating!

    ~Trav.~
