Have you never listened to The Shins before?
Nothing they write generally tells a story. They're pretty much tone poems, sets of phrases that evoke a tone. At least that's what I think since I can never make any sense of their songs.
Its funny how much you can love a band's sound but still have no clue what they're saying or trying to say.

If you have trouble understanding the lyrics or the songs in general, check this site out. Many people there have brought to light things about The Shins I never considered before, and they've given me different perspectives in order to better understand their songs. I believe James Mercer often expresses himself through symbolism, which is why their songs don't seem to make much sense.
