Bill Hicks performing for his first video, Sane Man, in Austin, Texas in 1989.

William Melvin Hicks was an American stand-up comedian in the 1980s and early 1990s. He challenged mainstream beliefs, aiming to "enlighten people to think for themselves."

Hicks used a ribald approach to express his material, describing himself as "Chomsky with dick jokes." His jokes included general discussions about society, religion, politics, philosophy and personal issues.

Hicks' material was often deliberately controversial and steeped in black comedy. In both his stand-up performances, and during interviews, he often criticized media and popular culture as oppressive tools of the ruling class, meant to "keep people stupid and apathetic."

An inspired and inspiring truth teller, dangerous and brave and scary all at once.
Richard Pryor

Hickss stand-up act is about taking a stand and occasionally dodging a chair.
Rolling Stone

Savage, brilliant, funny, tremendously intelligent.
John Cleese

He never disappointed.
David Letterman

Bill Hicksblowtorch, excavator, truth-sayer, and brain specialist, like a reverend waving a gun around. He will correct your vision. Others will drive on the road he built.
Tom Waits

  • Bill seems somewhat homophobic at times. If anyone has proof to the contrary let me know.

  • @LPercy73

Check out his Igby's gig. He talks about homophobia and the double standard a lot of men have; that of gay men being unacceptable but gay woman being a-ok :P

  • If you don't have a good sense of humor. Then get one FAGGOTS. Dealt with it.

  • Knock Knock

    Who's there?

    JIZZIM!!!

  • where r u? right here.. lol

  • @sinistergnr I can see where your coming from with people being offended, but there is light at the end of the tunnel and her name is Lisa Lampanelli, people go to her shows to be insulted and they take no offence, as she says if you can't take a joke leave!!! worth checking her out, always make me laugh, very different to Bill, but good nonetheless! :D

  • @LPercy73 nah, but out of context i can see how that perception can be given. bill is not over-explaining his position in this setting is all i think. A couple of times he said that we are all equal and free to do what we want...his basic stance on everything seems to be liberty and freedom of the mind (and rejection of all things phony and superfical, as it is these things that keep us away from our personal truths) imho.

  • @LPercy73 which part of the performance could be deemed homophobic?

seems you can't say shit these days without someone getting offended, especially faggots.

  • dodododing ding ding ding owouwrowrow

dign ding ding ding d-d-d-owurowowowo...house keeping

    GO AWAY!!! hahaha

  • Its kinda weird; I was shitting in my pants with no remorse when he had this show in Texas and now I'm watching it laughing so hard I'm shitting in my pants.

  • @LPercy73 I like Ayana's comment about it being a homophobic time, plus the uploader's regarding men's double standards, and would add only that he was often deliberately controversial. This gig is absolutely amazing. Thankyou Mills :D
