When water leaked into my building from the neighboring building on the square, we went to the owner to gain acess to their basement. They told me "It isn't a basement, it's a tunnel." They didn't want anything to do with the gross basement, so they gave me the key. We found the spot where the water was coming in my building & patched the holes. But the tunnel at the front end of the building struck me as odd. Where did it used to go before it was blocked off? To the courthouse? To other businesses? What was it used for? Helping slaves escape? To go from store to store? To go to court without a showdown on the streets? I wonder... Your thoughts? Anyone else have pictures of the tunnels under Princeton?

  • if you lift the man hole is it in the street or did they pave over it so you can't open it

  • @force311999 it may have ben a hole to dump coal in for the furnace

  • @force311999 No, the coal shoots are in the back of the buildings this side of the square, this is the front.

  • @force311999 I think it is now paved over.

  • we watched this in one of our classes i go to princeton middle school

  • Cool! So glad to be able to add to the body of knowledge studied by our future! Maybe this will inspire others to research more and one day maybe give tours and put Princeton on the map!

  • Princeton Indiana was a pivotal Underground Railroad Station. David Stormont was a celebrated & effective abolitionist. His heroic narratives are told in countless history books, including the attempt to rescue Peter Gist's enslaved family. This fascinating story involved Seth Conklin (a slave owner impostor)& Philadelphian Wm. Still. You can read more on Stormont and Princeton's U.G.R.R activities at the site below.
