A young baby elephant fell late at night 28 January 2009 into a man made well west of Amboseli National Park, Kenya, near Sinya Mines. Some local maasai found him and asked the Amboseli Elephant Research Project for help to rescue him. Together we tried to find his family, but they were not to be seen. We had to get him up - he was injured, sunburned and exhausted.

Kibo is now thriving at Sheldricks orphanage in Nairobi. He obviously misses his family, but is doing fine.

  • Did his family just leave him there? (elephant family) I would think that they would stay and try to help him out of the well?????

  • @dobbadough The family left early AM, probably scared of by the high number of local people passing by or getting water. They most likely was assessing what to do from some distance away, but since it was very hot and the baby was getting sunburned and scratched from trying to get out we decided to rescue her. And after that it would be too risky to leave her "around" for the family to find her - no vegetation in the surroundings. You can read more about this in story posted on ElephantVoices.
