@WindyPoplars09 - Thanks! The other thing to remember is that Peter is still an ordained Catholic priest. He lost control of his passion the night before, but Assumpta was strong enough to keep them both in check, despite how much it hurt her to do so. She knows the inevitable consequences. They both realize now that there can be no real physical expression of love between them until Peter is released from the priesthood and they figure out if and how they can remain in BallyK as a couple.

@ETrevar - thanks for your comments. They make a lot of sense to me and help me understand why he didn't kiss her. Very thoughtful.

@beerman37 - I don't think anyone has answered this: yes, it's Lough Tay. The beach is on the Guinness estate. Lough Tay is fairly far from Avoca, but a number of lovely scenes in BallyK are filmed here.

I think Peter's serious expression when he embraces Assumpta speaks of the remorse he feels at having caused her so much uncertainty up till now, and of how close he came to really losing her. Also, he is thinking about (and feeling) pure love for her, not about sex (though physical attraction is a factor). All those who are whinging about not seeing the kiss you wanted, get over it. Peter's consciousness is on a completely different level than your average sex-obsessed male in modern society.

It's not malarkey that Assumpta didn't grasp Peter's feelings. She's been absorbed with her own situation & is cynical, having no doubt heard of women taken advantage of by priests. She's not one to make or accept assumptions about feelings. She needs him to say it out loud to her face. And she WOULDN'T have married Leo if she HAD known and fully understood.

Thus scene bothered me for a long time, but the more I watch it the more sense it makes. Peter knows there's no going back after the night before. He finally steps up as a real man and takes his destiny into his own hands. By removing his collar he's saying "I want and choose Assumpta" and I'm going after what I want. Still, he knows they have a very rough road ahead.

Can I add that of all their scenes I like this one the least. I think it was the one cliche bordering on cheesy scene they had. Just the whole "I think about you all the time, I can't do my priestly duties, etc" I don't doubt that Peter felt that way, but it just didn't sound natural. It seemed forced, which is something that I've never felt with any of the other dialogue between them. But dangit, I'll take it.

She obviously knew he cared for her, but not the 'I can't think about anything else and will leave the church for you" kind of deep love. And if he wasn't going to stop being a priest there really was no point in her holding out hope. And he made very clear before she left that he was committed to the priesthood. That's what she meant by the "I had no idea." In other words, "I had no idea you loved me so much."

oh why why why why!!! all i wanted was ONE kiss!

thank you so much for sharing thses beautiful moments with the world. These are so very typical of the spirit of Ireland: lovely, conflicted, passionate yet restrained. Assumpta's assertion that she had no idea is, obviously, malarkey, but the proper thing for a maiden/married lady to say to a priest with whom she's deeply in love. It's part of the genteel face of a classic land.
I love ballykissangel and I love this scene in spite of the fact that Assumpta makes the most ridiculous statement in movie history: "I had no idea".

God, I love that scene. Was a BIG BK fan when it first ran, and it was SO NICE to finally see them get together... after what, three years of waiting.
Whatching it now still makes me smile.
