During the 2010s ..... 1 million Indians are going to die from smoking every year
That is the equivalent of 2,740 people every day
Or 114 people every hour
Or about 1.9 Indians will die every minute from smoking.
50% of these are going to be illiterate people
These are people who don't know what the warnings on the cigarette and beedi packets are saying,
In china the quit rate (people who quit smoking annually) went from 2% to 9 or 10% post the warnings going up,
Imagine if we got pictorial warnings in India
This would mean that mean almost 100,000 lives saved every year from a painful death,
Or about 274 people who would have died from tuberculosis, heart attacks, respiratory disease, cancer and strokes every day all caused by smoking would now live,
Smoking kills, there is conclusive evidence to this, worldwide 42 countries have put pictorial warnings, others that haven't yet put these warnings have all tobacco products clearly state that "Smoking Kills", in India we have a watered down "Smoking is Injurious to Health"
The government of India has a Group of Ministers that will decide in a hearing in Shimla, if these warnings are enforced or not,
Signing this petition will reach the Group of Ministers as well as to individual elected, Lok Sabha Members, and will help reinforce, that we all think 100,000 Indian lives are worth saving and that pictorial warnings should be introduced on all tobacco products.
