there's a program called ccleaner wich delete index.dat. its free and easy to use, and if you dont believe me youtube it and google it.

I opened my index.dat file and found pornhub(dot)com is that bad?

this no longer works with the latest update to Win 7 64 bit, so ignore it

this is the only thing that works, CCleaner and others don't.
she forgot to mention one key thing, so here is the full list of steps:
1. Restart in "Safe Mode with Command Prompt" (by hitting F8 at startup)
2. type cd/ as many times as needed to get to the root of C
3. type: del index.dat /s
4. type shutdown -r
system will restart normally with a new (and clean) index.dat file
The above method is the smartest method.

I do not know much about Vista , because I do not like it , anyways try to hit F8 while booting up certainly it will get you into safe mode
