Cougar killed in Ashland

A 76-pound cougar spotted in Ashland resting on a tree limb about 20 feet above the backyard of a local resident was shot and killed by Ashland Police and Oregon State Patrol officers on Saturday, February 7, 2009. Officers said they had received a number of reports of missing small animals (cats, ducks, geese) in the same vicinity where the cougar was lounging. Additionally, officers believed tranquilizing the cat would have given it time to run. Officers decided not to chase an agry cat through a crowded neighborhood and put bystanders and passerby in danger. See full story and photo gallery at www.dailytidings.com.

I am a little suprised they shot the cat. An average marksman could have darted it & having the right dogs around would have prevented an escape. Nearby people were not in harms way of this Cougar. Use some common sense & it's a pretty easy situation. However, you have cops in a small town with guns and maybe high school diplomas so what do you expect. Although I have to believe that some of these cops are hunters & should know better, but to kill a Cougar has bragging rights.
