Orchard Park High School students in Mr. Kennedy's Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) class have finished their Autonomous Pick and Place Robot project. The CIM class is semester long course where the students learn how computers are used in manufacturing. The first quarter of the class was devoted to learning to program microprocessors and the electronics necessary to provide inputs and outputs. The second quarter the class was the fabrication and assembly of our robot. This is part of a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) program that was initiated last year by the Technology Education program at OP.
The concept was designed and drafted by the students in Autodesk Inventor, a 3D computer aided drawing (CAD) program. The fabrication began by using MasterCam, a computer aided machining (CAM) software that turns CAD geometry into computer code called G code. The CAM program provides Cartesian Coordinates to a computer numerical control (CNC) router that machines the parts. A lathe and various other machining operations were part of the manufacturing process.
Yenka software was used to write and program the PICAXE microprocessors, which controlled the three stepper motors and various inputs and outputs. An Opto-Isolator circuit is used to accomplish the "handshakes" between all three microprocessors.
The turntable is driven by a stepper motor and is programmed to stop when the Sharp IR proximity sensor detects a part.
The Turntable PICAXE microprocessor, "handshakes" with the "X-Axis" PICAXE microprocessor, that turns the pick-up arm into position.
Once in position, the vacuum is turned on and the "Y-Axis" PICAXE microprocessor lowers to pick-up the part with a Vaccon suction cup (thanks Dave Vaccon Co. inc.). A "handshake" is programmed to the input of the "X-Axis" PICAXE microprocessor where the part is rotated to the drop zone. The vacuum solenoid is turned off and the part is released.
