Simon & Garfunkel - Richard Cory 1966 live

They say that Richard Cory owns one half of this whole town,
With political connections to spread his wealth around.
Born into society, a banker's only child,
He had everything a man could want: power, grace, and style.

But I, I work in his factory
And I curse the life I'm living
And I curse my poverty
And I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be
Richard Cory.

The papers print his picture almost everywhere he goes:
Richard Cory at the opera, Richard Cory at a show.
And the rumor of his parties and the orgies on his yacht!
Oh, he surely must be happy with everything he's got.

But I, I work in his factory
And I curse the life I'm living
And I curse my poverty
And I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be
Richard Cory.

He freely gave to charity, he had the common touch,
And they were grateful for his patronage and they thanked him very much,
So my mind was filled with wonder when the evening headlines read:
"Richard Cory went home last night and put a bullet through his head."

But I, I work in his factory
And I curse the life I'm living
And I curse my poverty
And I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be
Richard Cory.

  • Haven't heard this song for 30 years

  • That hair...

  • @romanbrough Sebastian contra mundi

  • With the tragic news of Gary Speed, this poem/song takes on a new poignency. Like Richard Cory, Gary had apparently everything to live for.

  • @Sarahrosebello...I don't want to argue with someone who likes Tom Lehrer, because he's one of my favs. So I'll just say you have good taste and I'm guessing a high IQ. Peace.

  • @suchahermit55

    I disagree.

Have you ever read the original? It was beautiful. I love the song, but it can't compare to the poem.

  • The ironic thing here is, Paul Simon's poetry is better than E.A.Robinson who authored the original poem.If you're aspiring to be a singer/songwriter Paul Simon is the best, at least at combining music and poetry into a memorable form.

  • This takes me straight back to July 1978. Coming back on a coach somewhere in Northern France, The Driver put the cassette of this album on and I heard this 3 or 4 times as the hours and miles rolled by. No idea what the other songs were. That was, very possibly the best holiday of my life, We were young and in love. Still in love with the same woman, but now life, and the years have rolled by.

  • So much better live

  • Art at 2:37 don't know why...
