For a FEMA type downdraft gasifier the tube diameter is WAY too big for a 10-20 horsepower engine. You'll get an extreme amount of tar (and takes a lot of time to fire it up). Check out the Ford type gasifier (at yahoo gasifier group or other place), a much better design than the FEMA. Ford used a larger oxydation ring, and smaller (70-120mm diameter) reduction tube below. Quicker startup, less tar (and fabrication costs are comparable).

You might want to make the holes in your grate a little bigger for more even flow and less clogging with ash and tars. I have built a unit with the bottom out of an old beer keg for the shaker grate and it works beautifully with no clogging at all. The holes are 3/8 diameter and spaced approximately 1 inch apart. I hope this helps and good luck with your experiments.

I am sorry it took so long for my response to reach you in the 21th Century from my humble spot here in the 19th Century...lets see here, it is GREEN because it is RENEWABLE (fossil fuels, not so much!)
Here in the 19th Century, we STACK the wood, not pack the wood. Maybe I can learn that 21st Century packing technique of yours.
My thought is that if you don't have anything good to say, then SHUT UP!
Why do you care, anyway?
What the fuck is wrong with your camera.

GREAT TIP!
I want to get her fired up and burn off some of my collection of tree branches and such pretty soon.
I still have not finished this bad boy...in fact, my next step is to insert my shaker/fire starting device.
I might try it out first and see if I need to increase the hole diameter or maybe upgrade the grate to a more solid material with larger slits or holes.
Thanks again for the advice...this is my first, so I am learning!
