In climates cooler than Tampa's, one can use the stalks of annual sunflowers, corn, sun chokes, sorghum and okra as a part of a mulch of mixed materials (aka "sheet composting") to turn garden waste into a useful asset. Here in Florida, the 'Bolivian Sunflower' (Tithonia diversifolia) makes VAST quantities of phosphorus-rich stalks that can be cut down green as needed.
