Last one.. Right now the political will and money is simply not there to incorporate the suburban lines as part of a metro, and not enough people are using the rail network to justify it. But, with more people moving back into the city, making it more dense, and projects like the Partick Station interchange resulting in massive passenger gains and future projects like Crossrail and a possible Tram-Train link to the Airport, we might just get the extensive LU-style network that we need!

The main problem with Glasgow's rail network is that SPT run the Subway, and First Scotrail run the other lines, which means that there are two separate pricing systems, two separate tickets, two separate fares. This puts people off using our rail network and makes them use the Bus (which First have a monopoly on..). And at the same time, First Scotrail are taking away the Glasgow liveries and taking away the sense of a 'Glasgow' network like we used to have. Glasgow needs a city wide metro!

Glasgow has two railway lines that run right through the centre of the city, east-west, which have six or seven stations underground in the city centre. The lines themselves are very similar in construction to London's sub-surface lines. It wouldn't take very much cost to incorporate these lines as part of the subway, and there was talk of incorporating the stretch between Dalmarnock and Exhibition Centre (with a spur to Parkhead using an old tunnel) in time for the Commonwealth Games.

London is ten times the size of Glasgow in population and about twice the size of Glasgow in area, so it's no wonder that London needs such an impressive system and that London's system is used more heavily. Glasgow's rail network is very extensive though, and it easily has the most train stations within its borders than any other city in the UK outside London. The difference between Glasgow and London is that London incorporated many of it's railway lines as part of the LU. Glasgow did not.

@154Andy The glasgow subway is busy every day!!!

@spg09phillipsl1 London Underground is the oldest underground transit system in the world, hence why it has to be upgraded. London Underground earns a lot more money than the Glasgow subway and we too are getting new trains.

Glasgow wins
