In Third Week of Hunger Strike, Ailing Western Saharan Human Rights Activist Aminatou Haidar Demands Moroccan Authorities Allow Her Return to Occupied Homeland

A Western Saharan human rights activist is in the third week of a hunger strike after being deported against her will by Moroccan authorities occupying her homeland. Aminatou Haidar, known as the Sahrawi Gandhi, is at the airport on the Canary Islands and is demanding that she be allowed to return to home. Morocco has occupied most of Western Sahara since 1975. We go to the Lanzarote airport to speak with Spanish actor Guillermo Willie Toledo, who is at Haiders side, we also speak with Mouloud Said, the Washington DC representative of the Sahrawi independence movement, the Polisario Front, and with University of San Francisco Professor Stephen Zunes, co-author of the forthcoming book Western Sahara: Nationalism, Conflict, and International Accountability.[includes rush transcript]

  • This lady is a scam, she's probably paid by Algeria to play this role and cause this dilemma. Here's what I think: Since she is a separatist and she is a polizario member and she denounced her citizenship, why come back now and say she wants to get back to Morocco.

Go to hell!!! That's where you belong, trust me they won't ask you for a Visa to get in that toasty place...

Morocco, love it or LEAVE it....go to Algeria (that's where you belong anyway).

  • First of all, there's no Spanish Sahara, it's Moroccan and has been that way for centuries (go to the history books and get informed) second of all, loser is with one O not two...LOSER!!!!!!

  • bedji83 ,,i have been in morocco and also i've been in the refugee camps for saharui people;;;;;;;;;;;;; why are you liying?

  • aminatou bitch

  • i doubt algeria will ever stop its support to the polisario. and war with polisario will indirectly mean a war with algeria. it seems like this conflict can go on forever. the problem here is also the fact no country regonizes the western sahara as part of morocco, even the claims about historic ties between morocco and west sahara have been turned down in the UN court.

  • because an autonomy plan would be right between independence and Moroccan sovreignty. A refrendum would be extremely complicated. "Who" would be allowed to vote?? thats the question. because the sahara stretches fom Morocco to the rio del oro all the way to Libya. what about the ones in tindouf many of them have been kidnapped and brainwashed. I believe the only solution would be a war or to stop Algerias support to polisario

  • yeah i understand that, but if people are so sure that the majority of sahrauis prefer being a part of morocco, then why not let them vote for it. we know polisario and algeria will only accept a referendum with independece as an option. so why waste time and efforts creating a new autonomy plan, deeply inside we know it's doesnt change the minds of polisario and algeria.

  • long live morocco and death to all haters

  • Morocco has accepted the referendum numerous times but polisario never agreed about who is eligible to vote. Since polisario wants independence and nothing but independence. Also if the referendum is in favor of Morocco what can stop polisario from returning to armed conflict???
