The students of the California State Summer School for the Arts Music department perform Gamelan on their final day. This piece, Bubaran Udan Mas, means "Golden Rain." These instruments are Javanese in origin.

Please visit the official website of the Gamelon instructors. There's tons of information there, and the music is just gorgeous.

  • im Indonesian, by the way its not balinese, but javanese, im gamelan player, especially Bonang. i hear too much noise there ..just compared with the native or the real player here, download at 4shared.com and search udan mas..you will see the differences..the startign is bad

The kendang player and the Bonang may be a little bit false, the sound 'Pung" and "Bung" of Kendang isnt clear. the way Bonang Barung and penerus player is a little bit strange..and the Kempul for the "Suwuk" is too fast,

  • @fraga667 These are mostly students who had never even heard of Gamelan before, and what we managed after a few weeks, pretty much. I don't think it's fair to compare it to native Javanese performers >.>

  • actually you can have balinese or javanese. . .

  • wow i'm amazed at how critical these comments are. The players are American high school students who never SAW a gamelan 4 weeks earlier. I personally feel it sounds just as good as some non-Indo college attempts (after a semester or two.)

you all should lighten up - i'd LOVE to see you all pick up some western instrument and play like this in say an orchestra in 4 weeks, pfft.

sigh - as for my NOT SO HUMBLE OPINION - these kids rule + rock + given the circumstances they are brilliant!!!

  • nice!

  • yeah... were trying to make it too balinese sounding. not that i don't like balinese gamelan, in fact i prefer it. Udan Mas just wasn't meant to be improvised.

  • it's a bit different than the version i used to hear. i feel like there's too much improvisation in the filling/isen-isen part. this makes the piece a bit messy at some parts. overall, good job though...
