Eastbound Expressway first became born in 1976, when I recorded a song called "Danger Zone" for Pye Records, by Ian Levine And The Sounds Of Summer, and Pye Records decided the name was too self indulgent, so I came up with Eastbound Expressway. Then in 1977 we released "Cloudburst" on Contempo Records. Then, in 1978, when AVI Records fell in love with a track off the first James Wells album, called "Never Let Go', but hated and loathed James' rather over the top wailing on it, the REAL Eastbound Expressway was born. "Can't you just use the music and the girl backing vocals, and lose him ??" was the question, so indeed we had to find a name for the group, and suddenly the record became a hit on Billboard's black charts and got recognised as early R&B, to the extent that it became a cult record to this day. So we did an album for AVI of girl-group led disco in 1979. Jump forward seven years to 1986. I had just left Record Shack, and I wanted another anthem. High Energy had been the anthem to High Energy music, and the name of the music was changing to Eurobeat. Well we couldn't very well call a song "Eurobeat", now could we ?? Oh yes we could... Eur...... A..... Beat, that equals "You're A Beat", and so we did it, a story which my friend Damon Rochfort still tells at dinner parties, while creasing up into paroxysms of laughter. So we reactivated Eastbound Expressway for this High Energy anthem, and curiously, this follow up, "Knock Me Senseless", was a big hit in the US, and even got played at The Superbowl. Joycelyn, Karen, and Bonnie, became our new Eastbound Expressway, and made these anthems that got played from London to Sydney. And incidentally, Joycelyn still looks fabulous twenty one years later.

The girl who sang "You're A Beat" was Bonnie, who became very difficult and left, so Karen sang lead on "Knock Me Senseless" We didn't have any photos of the newer lineup with Aisha replacing Bonnie, so we had to go with one of the earlier photos. By the time of "Rainstorm" and then "Whiplash", we'd taken new photos. The third girl was Joycelyn Phillips, who has a brand new track on "Disco 2008".
