Budapest Metro - Millenium Subway Ride

The millenium subway in Budapest is the second oldest subway in Europe (The London underground being the oldest one). This old line is integrated as line M1 in the subway network and was opened in 1896.

Most of the route runs below the Andrássy street, and the tunnel was constructed very close under the ground, so freight traffic has been banned on the Andrassy street to prevent the tunnel from collapsing.

This is a short ride between the stations "Bajcsy Zsilinsky út" and "Oktogon". Note the small height of the tunnel and the stations. The subway is operated by relatively short low floor cars, therefore about every one and a half minute a train is arriving in rush hours.

This is the first ever underground railway built in mainland Europe. It was built by first digging a trench, laying the rails, building a foundation, and then laying a road on top. This is classified as "subsurface," as opposed to "deep level," metro.
