This is a paper mache project that shows you how to make a great looking and durable Spartan Shield like in the movie 300. I use all easy to find materials. It cost me about twenty dollars and that includes paint.
The web based tutorial with more pictures and instructions is here:
http://www.stormthecastle.com/how-to-make-a/how-to-make-a-spartan-300-hoplite...

On that page I also have a picture of a real Spartan Shield. It is from the battle of Pylos in 425 BC. I took the picture in a museum in Athens Greece.

I also have video tutorials on making"
Spartan 300 Helmet
Spartan 300 Arm Guards
Spartan 300 Leg Guards
Spartan Spear

  • hey Will! I've just put the finishing touches on mine. It started out os Perseus's shield, with a lightning bolt ornament, then i took the rim off, and replaced the bolt with my initials, which i did with spray paint and a stencil i made. today i used stencils and acrylics to put the words "AΘΗΝΑ"(Ancient Greek for Athena) and "ΑΠΟΛΛΩΝ"(Ancient Greek for Apollo), my two favorite Olympians. I want to make the rest of your spartan stuff as well!

  • @SirMinecrafter1999 wow! nice work. Send me a pic!

  • Hey, can you use white printer/printing paper for the 2nd layer of paper mache instead of newspaper?

  • @TheShadowFreak3010 yes, definitelyl

  • @epicfantasy Does the cardboard ring cover underneath the snow sled?

  • @300spartanswin I think I see. As you tighten down the bolts it will pull down the cirlce into the parabolic shape.

  • @Asakaro: Well, it is said that some Spartan shields covered almost the whole body, from neck to ankle, and these would be wielded by a 5'10 6 feet men if not a bit shorter

  • where do you put the paper mache

  • This is the most intuitive guy I've ever seen. He's like the McGuiver of nerds.

  • @epicfantasy I've now decided to put a bible tverse on it (as I said, many changes), Ephesians 6:16, "Take on the Shield of Faith..."

  • @Asakaro not necessarily, they really wouldn't have to be. A technique that the Spartans used often was the phalanx, making a wall of shields and throwing the spears over.you wouldn't need that big of shields for that.

  • @epicfantasy I'll send you a few pics of the different stages

  • arnt sparten shields MUCH bigger

  • @epicfantasy Alright, thanks!
