Drew Pappadopoulos vs Abney 2011, Div 4, 92lb Oklahoma State Finals Match. Use the Pause / Play button to pause around the 2 second and 1 second mark on the time clock. Click fast and you can advance frame by frame . Camera goes off to the left as the ref's award the 2 points for the take down (sorry). At the one second mark, there are two frames you can clearly see Abney on all fours, in bounds, both of Drews armes under Abneys (double under hooks) with full control. After discussion, both refs called the take down before time ran out and awarded two points. Watch all of the table workers, are they paying attention to the clock? Watch all three of there faces and where they are looking when time expired. They did not even throw the towl in (on the left side of the table). Watch the center table worker. Who is he cheering for and why is a table worker cheering? Based on where the take down occured (in front of the table) and Fernandez (the ref) between the table workers and the wrestlers, how could the table workers see the takedown? With this in mind, how could they make any judgement regarding where on the time clock the takedown occured. The table worker running the clock, (on right) does not even look at the clock or his control panel. (Neither do the other two). According to the ref's, the take down was not in question, the table said time ran out. Why would two ref's that made the same call in front of the time clock, let table workers, who were not even looking at the clock, could not see the takedown, and had no clue where they were in the match (obvious from watching the video) reverse a call that the ref's discussed a full 30 seconds before making? This should not have happened in any match, much less at a State Finals Match! I do not think it would be right to name names so I will list the following information in general terms: Before uploading this viedo, I wanted to get opinions from qualified people. So I went to the Edmond North Wrestling Staff, Moore West Wrestling Staff, Guthrie Junior High and High School Wrestling Staff, and the Oklahoma State University Wrestling Staff, 6 OSU Wrestlers, and 2 Wrestlers at OSU training for the US World Team. All (and I mean 100% with not even a mabe) had the same two part opinion: At 1 second before the clock ran out, Drew scored two points with a ligitamite takedown, and how in the world did the ref's both get the call right and then give the match to the wrong kid? Like a very very famous wrestling coach told Drew, "your going to get bad calls all of your life, take them in stride and use them as fuel for future matches".
Check out the March 18, 2011 NCAA Quarterfinals match between Iowa's 141-pounder Montell Marion and Illinois' James Kennedy. Marion spun around Kennedy for a takedown on the edge of the mat to pull off the stunning 8-7 victory. Almost the same type of takedown except all Marion had in bounds was one toe and he was still at about a 45 degree angle with only his arms under Kennedys arms. I guess what does not count at OKWA State counts at the NCAA Nationals.
