Greetings everybody! Please check out my new Myspace music page when you get a chance. The project goes by the name "Mr. Dithers." thanks!

I have this immaculate Roland GR-300 guitar synth and the G-707 guitar controller. (I have the 505 as well which actually works better with the GR-300 but I wanted to test the 707 with the 24-pin cable I bought on Ebay!)) I am not really a guitar player but wanted to use the 300 for textures - kind of like what Andy Summers did with his on certain Police tunes. The GR-300 is not midi in any way. It is triggered by a guitar equipped with a GK-1 pickup and rare 24-pin cable. The GR-300 features six voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs)-one for each string. It also features a hexa-fuzz unit (again one for each string) which can be layered with the VCOs. You can also blend the actual clean guitar sound as well. The key to the sound is that the VCOs and Hexa-fuzz go through a beautiful fat 24dB analog filter. The cutoff and resonance are adjusted from the guitar. However, in the back of the unit you will find an input for an expression pedal. This is designed to sweep the filter to give you wah-wah efx. This is for all the synth geeks out there who are compulsive "tone chasers."

  • it sounds similar to the synth john entwistle used on "905". could it replicate the sound townshend used for "who are you"?

  • For "Who Are You," I think Townshend put his guitar thru an Arp 2600 and used the auto-trigger to gate the sound and pan each note. It would be much cheaper and easier to use any modern synth that has an external audio input. The Evolver can do it very well along with dozens of others. Also, check out the new Boss "Slicer" pedal. You can nail Won't Get Fooled and Who Are You. I also hear good things about the Adrenalinn pedal too.

  • very cool way of using the GR300. I saw you also have a GR700. Which one do you prefer?

  • The GR300 tracks infinately better but the 700has a ton more sounds. You can actually use the 300 on stage and not worry about it glitching. The 700 is great in the studio for fat pads and ballsy bass textures but you really have to adjust your playing. The 700 = love/hate. I use the 300 more - but my 700 is mint and looks awesome.

  • I currently have a borrowed GR700 + G707 but the guitar is not working very well so it's hard to tell how well it would respond if fully functional. I like the basic sound of the 700 (as i like the JX3P) and the system i borrowed also includes the PG200 programmer which is very neat. I am thinking of hunting down a G808 or 505 plus a GR300 and a GM70 which would pretty much cover what i want to do but i think that this constellation might cost me an arm and a leg.

  • I went thru three 707 controllers before I found one that really worked. People have a tendancy to unload junk on Ebay with a disclaimer they are "unable to test it." Also - its imperative to have the actual roland 24-pin cable with the metal ends. The plastic ones never seem to work right for me. I have a 505 as well. I hear the 808 is sweet. The Joness site has all the info you will need. He recommends the Ibanez controller and they come up once in awhile on Ebay.
