Subhash Mukhopadhyay was born in Calcutta in India. His life and death has been the subject of countless newspaper reviews and a Bollywood film directed Tapan Sinha entitled "Ek Doctor ki Maut" (Death of a Physician). Dr. Subhash Mukhopadhyay created history when he became the first physician in India and second in the world after British physician Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards to perform the procedure to produce the test tube baby " Durga" (alias Kanupriya Agarwal ) on October 3, 1978.

Facing social ostracisation, bureaucratic negligence, reprimand, and insult instead of recognition from the Marxist West Bengal Government and refusal of the Government of India to allow him to attend International conferences, he committed suicide in his Calcutta residence in 1981. His feat has been given belated recognition as the Indian physician who in 1986 was "officially" regarded as being the first doctor to perform in-vitro fertilization in India. His reinstatement to glory is attributable to Professor T.C. Anand Kumar who is credited to be the mastermind behind India's second (officially the first) test tube baby.

NEW DELHI, September 5: Former CBI Director Joginder Singh says that during his tenure he faced ``intense pressure'' from the top while probing corruption charges against politicians. However, in the Mumbai Port Trust case, records show that he was the one putting pressure on the agency.
According to documents with The Indian Express, Singh instructed his Mumbai branch to try and ``link'' former Surface Transport Minister Jagdish Tytler with the controversy despite the CBI saying that there was no evidence against Tytler.

However, the chief of the US premier investigating agency underlined the "substantial" exchange of information between the two countries, especially after the September 11 terror attack in America and underlined the need for greater cooperation in the field of combating terrorism, computer crime and in areas like drug trafficking.

On the shootout incident outside the American Center in Kolkata this morning, Mr Mueller was not willing to swallow hook, line and sinker the theory, which they believe to be serving vested Indian interest blaming today's incident in Kolkata on the banned militant outfit Harkat-ul-Mujahideen and its offshoot Harkat-ul-Jehad-e-Islami.

Significantly, the Kolkata incident coincided with the visit of the FBI chief to India and the fourth meeting of the Indo-US Joint Working Group on Counter Terrorism, which concluded here today.

"Motivation and identities of the attackers are being ascertained and it will be premature to react on the nature of the attack before the investigation had been completed," Mr Mueller told newspersons at the American Embassy here.

"I would like to wait and see what the investigation discloses about the purpose of the attack, he reiterated when asked whether the incident was a terrorist attack.

The investigative and legal teams that cracked the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case and secured the conviction of 26 of the accused were made up of top-notch professionals.
Turning the results of the SIT investigation into convictions was dependent on the skill and hard work of the prosecution lawyers. The young advocate credited with carrying much of the burden on his shoulders is Jacob Reginald Daniel, Deputy Legal Adviser to the CBI, South Zone. He was chosen to be the Public Prosecutor under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act for the Designated Court to prosecute the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case on behalf of the CBI.
Daniel was selected as a Public Prosecutor by the CBI in 1983. He has appeared, among other cases, in the sensational Padmasundari affair in Pondicherry and in the anti-corruption cases against top government officers, senior bank officers, Customs officers and Central Excise personnel.
