In which John Green teaches you how Russia evolved from a loose amalgamation of medieval principalities known as the Kievan Rus into the thriving democracy we know today. As you can imagine, there were a few bumps along the road. It turns out, our old friends the Mongols had quite a lot to do with unifying Russia. In yet another example of how surprisingly organized nomadic raiders can be, the Mongols brought the Kievan Rus together under a single leadership, and concentrated power in Moscow. This set the stage for the various Ivans (the Great and the Terrible) to throw off the yoke and form a pan-Russian nation ruled by an autocratic leader. More than 500 years later, we still have autocratic leadership in Russia. All this, plus a rundown of some of our favorite atrocities of Ivan the Terrible, and a visit from Putin!

A medieval historian (interestingly, in the time of medieval Kiev) George Kedrenos wrote of the ancient Black Sea area. In his work, much of it translated from ancient Greek and Latin sources, talks of Ros. He clearly calls the Ros "A Scythian people". Perhaps the first writer to identify Ros as Slavs was Ibn Khorobhed in his work "Roads and Kingdoms". Written roughly in A.D. 820's, quote "The Ros are of the Slav".

Russia and Ukrainian history begins with the Scythians and Greeks, not with nestor chronicle. Scythians were the first inhabitants of Russia, but Greeks were the first to settle. However, Greeks and Scythians were very close in the area, as evident in the city 'Olba (or Olvia). Herodotus referred to a part of Scythian Ukraine as "Gerros", which translate as "Land of Ros". Likewise, Latins often called the Scythians "Rossi", referring to their "Red" clothing.

Too many forget that Nestor pro-Scandinavian, the chronicle itself is highly inaccurate in several areas. Example, Nestor, after stating that the Ros were Vikings, describes another scene like this, "And there were Varangians, Slavs, and another called Ros". Inaccuracy goes on from there. People also ignore that Rurik was not the first Viking princedom in north Russia. As for origin, it is quite clear that Ros is Scythian. Herodetus wrote of a Scythian "Gerros". Gerros translate as "Land of Ros"

This explains why Herodotus named an area of modern Ukraine "Gerros", which translates as "Land of Ros". Genetics clearly show that Swedes were influienced by Slavic blood (otherwise there would be no shared genetics with Macedonians and Bulgarians). There were Viking princedoms in northern Russia years before Rurik, yet even Pro-Normanist historians discard that history. Ros were first identified as Scythians. To say they were Vikings means to ignore a previous 1500 year history of the area.

'The Varangians or Varyags (Old Norse: Væringjar; Swedish: Väringar; Greek: Βάραγγοι, Βαριάγοι, Varangoi, Variagoi; Bulgarian, Russian and Ukrainian: Варяги, Varyagi / Varyahy; Belarusian: Варагі, Varahi; Hungarian: Varégok) was the name given by Greeks and East Slavs to Vikings, who between the 9th and 11th centuries ruled the medieval state of Rus' and formed the Byzantine Varangian Guard.'
