Prime Minister Trouble in Thailand

Thailand's ruling People Power Party (PPP) threw its weight behind leader Samak Sundaravej today to return as prime minister, but it is not clear if he will accept the offer. Similar protests been occurring in cities like Shanghai and Nanjing.


STORY:
Protesters occupying Thailand's seat of government say they will not accept anyone from the PPP as prime minister, least of all Samak, who had to step down this Tuesday after a court found him guilty of a conflict of interest.

[Kudeb Saikrachang, PPP Spokesman]:
"Today, the People Power Party has a resolution under the framework of law that we still support our party's leader, which is in accord with the democratic system.”

The Constitutional Court ruled on Tuesday that Samak, accused by the People's Alliance for Democracy of being a puppet for ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, broke the law in hosting cooking shows on commercial television while in office.[Kudeb Saikrachang, PPP Spokesman]:
"Our party still supports him because he has done nothing wrong at all. I can say that the court verdict was a case that he acted against the constitution because he mis-understood the law.”

Protesters occupying Thailand's seat of government say they will not accept anybody from parliament's dominant PPP as a replacement for disqualified Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej. They have occupied the compound of the prime minister's office for more than two weeks.

[Somsak Kosaisook, PAD Leader]:
"Samak violated the constitution many times, he should not becomePM again. No one in the PPP should become prime minister or a minister in the government."

The PPP has called a special session on Friday to vote for a new prime minister.

The country is being run by a caretaker cabinet under a brother-in-law of Thaksin. Thaksin is now in exile in London, havingskipped bail along with his wife to avoid corruption charges.
