"Once upon a time in Manhattan-
when getting into an exclusive restaurant required not a secret e-mail address but rather the gift of gab, a steely liver, and a gentlemanly air of thuggery- a though Jew from Philly named Toots Shor opened up shop at 51 West 51st Street. Social safe house to DiMaggio, Sinatra, and even Nixon, the eponymous hideaway-along with its butterball barkeep-lives again in this documentary TOOTS, directed by Shor's granddaughter Kristi Jacobson, who proves that no one can get cronies and crumbums (those that are left anyway: Cronkite, Talese, and Berra) to spill their mortal secrets like a young lady can. Stories tumble out like fine bourbon in this quarts-and-all treatment: AP reporters who ran in, knocked one back, and were back at their typewriters two minutes later (talk about freedom of the press), and SHor bursting into his daughter's confirmation cowboy-style, at the last minute, off an all-night bender with John Wayne in tow. The party couldn't last forever, and when Toots finally sold the place in 1959 for $1.5 million, he treated his wife, Baby, to a well-deserved European Vacation. When he got to Italy, he logged some quality time with - who else? - Pope John XXIII. Had Toots been Catholic or even one bit repentant, it could have been a confession for the ages." -Hudson Morgan, Men's Vogue, September 2007

  • @kpl1228 Yes, what an era. If you don't have the TOOTS DVD, you must get it.

  • @tallpaul521 I noticed that too---I own the Lombardi biography by Maraniss and Gifford autobiography, and in both Gifford quoted that-----about Lombardi, not Toots. I think Gifford got the two guys mixed up. The chapter on Toots in Gifford's autobiography is great, however. What an era.

  • watched it very good documentary(: You don't see this anymore because of the paparazzi): frank gifford is a leo, healthy leo's are loyal(:

  • AMAZING DOCUMENTARY!!! I barely heard of Toots and after watching this DVD I wish I knew the man. A wonderful and riviting story!

  • I suspect the glasses from e-bay are bootlegs.

  • Check out Amazon or Netflix.

  • shit! Shore had more pull than the president at the time. what a guy. class... simply class.

  • Superb film, get online TODAY and order your DVD copy from IndiePix!

Watched it last night; rare to see a film not hit one wrong note, but that's what happened - could not have been better produced.

My god, what a mistake his last restaurant (not the Riese chain dump on 33rd St) was.

When the party was over in the mid-sixties, boy, was it over.

Also read The New Yorker profile on Toots if you have the DVD set of past issues.

  • Received the Toots DVD today and it is excellent. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants a nostalgic drive through the golden age of New York. As a younger fellow, this let's me into the past and helps me see where my dad and uncle used to hang out. This movie is tops! It sure would have been nice to meet Toots. He seems like my kind of guy.

  • Search for TOOTS at IndiePixFilms and you can find the DVD. We have it available on 10/21, with a discount for pre-orders.
