Creator's Notes:

First, I'd like to thank you for watching my film. This is my first time directing a short fim, so I really appreciate, and also very grateful, to the viewers for watching it.

I. How Dualawa Came to Be

How Dualawa came to be started when I was walking in the night, listening to a song in my Ipod. Then Evangelion's "Borderline" track played. It was very eerie and sounded very disturbing.

Then suddenly, I imagined making a disturbing short film using the said track. I pictured it akin to that of The Ring's cursed video track. I wanted it to have no story at all, and just make a damn disturbing video with lots of symbolism and subliminal messages about the duality of life.

So, I started taking shots of almost everything I can see: frogs, ants, my great grandma's coffin, a priest's suit, candles, etc.

I told Mia Borja about it. She suggested that I should make a story out of it so that people would appreciate it. At first, my pride told me not to do so, but eventually I came up with a story.

The story came up when I was shooting the "House" scene. I remembered the story of Orpheus, of how he lost Eurydice by breaking Hades's condition. That's how MY interpretation, or the "mainstream" story, was inspired.

II. "Reception"

As I uploaded the video, I didn't plan to put a synopsis, thinking that it would make the film more "mysterious." Plus, I was in this "Arrogant Artist" phase. I arrogantly thought that if you don't get the story, then you're not bright or smart. That, ladies and gentlemen, was an idiotic mistake! The first viewers of this film had negative comments. They mostly point out that it's too vague to be even a bit likable. Well, I certainly deserved that!

Fortunately, I realized my mistake. I thought that most viewers would certainly not understand the video, or like it even, unless I put a story or a synopsis. So I posted a synopsis and info about the short film.

Thankfully, after I did that, most of the comments were positive. I've learned my lesson... DON'T BE ARROGANT! Ha ha ha!!!

III. Interpretation of Dualawa

Like I said before, I really intended Dualawa to be vague and heavy with symbolism. Even if I posted my story, I also want to "challenge" the viewers to have their interpretations of the symbols and even on the story. Like what most artists say: "We have the right to claim our art as solely ours, but we cannot say the same thing to its interpretation because it (interpretation) also belongs to the viewers."

Just so you know, this is not meant to be a scary video. It's just this is the way I wanted it to look like.

  • Thanks!!

    @ Ronin

    Sup fellow TDPer? Hehehe

I really intended it to be simple. I really don't "adhere" to the "less is many," but in this case i had to do it. I wanted it to be eerie and by achieving that, i had to make the scenes simple.

Oh, i do to admit that Dualawa was quite inspired by J-horror films. Heck, the BG music comes from an anime. Pero I tried hard not to make a blatant rip-off of J-horror flicks. ^__^

    Anyway, thanks for the comment!!!

  • nasa condition yun eh. thats why they disappeared to the unknown. they could disappear in this world and be reunited to another plane of existence or may be not. i leave you to draw your own conclusion of the story. ^_^

    oh, thanks for watching it.

  • Nice work! kuya Odoy! Really want to be like you! such imagination... -kev

  • interesting short film...creepy but sweet. Like how even in death they could not be truly parted.

  • whoa! goosebumps!

    congrats! 5*!

  • huh, I like the soundtrack and the style a lot, hope you make some more movies :D

  • I know I'm not in the position to say this cause I know I can't create anything close as to what you've done but I'll say it anyway. Suggestions, instead of the girl simply walking, why not make her move frame by frame (imagine Sadako-style). Also, when you focus on one character and the other character serve as a backgroud, why not make the background character blur? Suggestions only as a movie fan.

  • I'd say it would have been more effective if there were lyrics on the BGM. I know it will turn out to be a music video but it would have been more appealing. The problem is, it's difficult to find a song which is morbidly romantic. The concept was great as well as the setting but some movements of the scene was so simple.

  • tads! muzta naman ka? john ni! ayos ni imo vid ah.. karemember ko naa man dy ka vid sa youtube.. heheh.. nice au! tads naa pa to mga pics nga long hair? atay miss na nako ang long hair.. heheh.. i want to fuckin bang my head! heheh..

  • The BGM came from one of the Evangelion OST's .And definitely contribute to the spooky vibe of this video. kudos to you. and hope that you continue to make good quality movies.
