  • thanks for the responses.insightful.love the sgi. as well as the nichiren shu and sho shu, tendai all the wonderful branches of the Buddhas family tree and its many colorful leaves.still i bristle at the factioning of the Nichiren schools.we only copied our brothers over seas by drawing dividing lines here too...but maybe its better this way? for now i will chant for peace my own and for others in solitude.

  • In its early days, the Soka Gakkai was despised and laughed at in Japanese society as a gathering of the sick and poor. Josei Toda, my life mentor, took this as a point of pride, however, and declared with confidence:

  • “The true mission of religion is to bring relief to the sick and the poor. That is the purpose of Buddhism. The Soka Gakkai is the ally and friend of the common people, a friend to the unhappy. However much we may be looked down on, we will continue to fight for the sake of such people.” Daisaku Ikeda, "Faith in Revolution" : An Interview, Tricycle Magazine

  • @KidRaza "what stops me from making gohonzons and starting my own little sub-sect?" Nothing really. People have been doing just that ever since the death of Nichiren. The longterm success of your sect will depend on the degree to which you share the heart of the Buddha and to which you can inspire your disciples to do the same. Come back and let us know how you get on.

  • @KidRaza "if you take the history out form under it isnt it just hollow?" No history has been taken out of anything. The movement of active Buddhism has always been one of evolution. The tradition of Nichiren Buddhism is 'hon nin myo' - the future determined by the actions we take now, not constantly looking over our shoulder at what has gone before. We're practising a living religion, not running a museum.

  • @KidRaza "how do you cut out the priesthood and yet keep the rituals?" Simple. Revert to the practices set down by the founder. Excise any superfluous traditions created by those who have made careers of positioning themselves between the disciples ('Bodhisattvas of the Earth') and the eternal Buddha.
