  • My favorite thing about the great Mingus is this: when he was not going outside with his rhythms and notes, his "standard" bass playing was SO GOOD! He threw in a lot of non-root phrases, grace notes, etc, and stayed interesting always. Because he was such a visionary, I think that often his straight ahead playing is neglected.

  • Started like "roun midnight". These guys were the best. We do however have many fine young musicians coming along but the era that produced the giants of jazz must be preserved so they can learn and grow and execute. Powerful piece.
