I think the downfall of the Rayman series was that they focused on the villains being the main driving force of advertising.
Rayman Origins, I think finds a better balance to that and makes Rayman and Globox a LOT more fun to play with.
Look at any other series, Sly Cooper and his gang are the heart of the story, Crash Bandicoot's a funny character, and Mario and Sonic balance the popularity of all their characters.
