Ginebra Clobbers Smart Gilas [100-72] October 23, 2009 (acevergs)

Playing without Eric Menk and Mark Caguioa, the Barangay Ginebra Kings showed Smart-Gilas what a difference experience could make in a campaign.

Ronald Tubid had another splendid performance with 22 points including 4-of-7 3-pointers as the Kings dealt the Nationals another jolting defeat, 100-72, Friday at the Cuneta Astrodome.

It was the first time Barangay Ginebra won three straight games since a seven-game winning streak the previous conference between March 28 through May 20.

With Menk and Caguioa sidelined with injuries, Barangay Ginebras reserves made a good account of themselves, providing a little of everything in a game where experience clearly told heavily on their young challengers.

JC Intal, Enrico Villanueva and Willy Wilson ruthlessly asserted their presence in the lane and reduced Japeth Aguilar and Rabeh Al Hussaini to second-rate big men as the Kings mugged the Nationals off the boards 63-46.




Jayjay Helterbrand and Celino Cruz also showed why they belong in the leagues elite class of point guards. Displaying steady leadership, the Kings backcourt outplayed and outhustled Smart- Gilas JV Casio and Mark Barroca, often times putting them off balance with their fancy dribbling and crisp passing.




As much as we want to help Smart-Gilas in terms of learning we also need to win as well. Sometimes winning gets in the way of the national team. But theyre (Smart Gilas) still very, very young and theyve got a long program, said Barangay Ginebra coach Jong Uichico after their third straight win that kept the Kings in solo spot atop the leaderboard of the 2009-2010 KFC-PBA Philippine Cup.

Uichico also stressed the game might have a different result had American CJ Giles was included in the rotation.

Who knows it could have had a different ending had Giles suited up,Uichico said.

Giles, who played just five minutes against Talk N Text on Wednesday, showed up in street clothes so did Chris Tiu who is sidelined by a groin injury.

Giles is reportedly flying to United States to be with his two-year old son, who is very ill.

The absence of Giles somehow cushioned the impact of Menks and Caguioas absence. Menk is sideline by a fractured toe while Caguioa is nursing a swollen knee.

Helterbrand scored 15 points and had four assists while Intal (11 points, 10 rebounds) and Villanueva (11 points, 11 boards) dished out a double-double effort as the Kings practically dominated the Nationals throughout.

Tubid open the flood gates with three-pointers as the Kings raced to an 18-4 lead that held up to the end.

Barroca scored 20 points and had nine assists, Al Hussaini added 14 and 10 rebounds and Casio chipped in 11 points for Smart Gilas which remains winless in three starts. (DBC)
