@berndpfe It burns up except for the beefy struts that hold the orbiter on. They land in a predetermined place in either the Indian or Pacific ocean depending where they launch to.

Q: Does the EFT burn up while reentry or does it enter the atmosphere with less or no damage and falls into the ocean (supposedly then gets seriously deformed or damaged just because dashing onto the water surface at really high speed)?

@Ferrariman601 Yes. The forward scorching is from the firing of the SRB separation motors, when the boosters separate form the tank 2 minutes into flight. The aft dome is from absorbing a bit of the heat from the SRB flames while they are burning for 2 minutes only 35-40 feet below the bottom of the tank . This is why the tank has this foam insulation all over it.
