Killingly, Conn. —
Work at the new Killingly High School building site stopped briefly this afternoon, allowing town and school officials, developers and workers to celebrate a construction milestone.
As a light rain pattered off hard-hats and work boots, the last piece of structural steel for the project was hoisted up and laid into place, beginning an 11-month countdown to project completion.
The topping ceremony is an unusually symbolic event for construction crews whose profession typically leaves little room for sentiment.
The ceremony is a traditional milestone on these type of sites, said Angelo Petrocelli, project manager for Gilbane, the firm overseeing work on the $180 million project. Either the highest or last beam is signed by the iron workers and topped with an American flag and a pine tree before being placed.
