@wehitandrun It would be excellent if that was that actual conversation; because it's true.
-
@wehitandrun Wyatt didn't 'cover' it. Costello and Langer wrote the song *for* Wyatt and Wyatt recorded it first. Costello recorded his own performance of it the following year.

Beautiful declan McManus xxx
-
reason he sings this is because he's from Birkenhead and there is/was a big shipyard there (Cammell Laird) - tribute to a lot of his friends who worked there
-
yes, sounds like a Clinger song, but ELvis kills it
-
@cutandpaste1 good grief.

@cutandpaste1 I do know music, I'm 38 years old and a musician. I also know who Elvis Costello is - and so don't refer to him merely as 'the singer'. You can call me dumb, however I've clearly schooled you - with no little eloquence and a proud display of musical knowledge. You, on the other hand, are confined to one sentence replies. You've been exposed, there's no coming back from this. Or do you want to try and elaborate? Given you 'know music'.
-
@cutandpaste1 Barely true, and something you'll learn about music when you grow up: timbre, tone, feeling. It's a beautifully nuanced performance, in my opinion, and he's singing to music that was not written by himself, therefore not for him. Also, Elvis Costello is not simply 'the singer' but a world renowned writer/musician/performer. This is not opera!

still langer wrote it for wyatt, but costello's lyrics are awesome even if wyatt version is better in my opinion
-
@cutandpaste1 You're deaf my man.

catziggy ,,, you are quite right , it was written by elvis's good friend robert wyatt, when the ship were lost in the falklands we believed the contracts to rebuild would come to british ship yards , how wrong we were !

Actually, you're both wrong. Wyatt covered Elvis's song. Elvis wrote all of the lyrics, and Clive Langer wrote all of the music. Clive called Elvis and said "I've written the greatest instrumentation I've ever written" and Elvis responded with "I've written the greatest lyrics I've ever written". (paraphrased)
