In this video, made 1 April 2008, Simon Nieminski, Cathedral Organist at St Mary's Metropolitan Cathedral, Edinburgh, Scotland, plays one of a set of four jazz pieces for organ, entitled "Let's Get Rhythm!, composed by German organist Thomas Ross (b. 1969). It is published by Dohr Verlag, and the score may be purchased from the publisher by writing info@dohr.de .

The organ seen in this video is the new (inaugurated 2008) 3-manual pipe organ by Matthew Copley, one of the largest new pipe organs to be installed in the UK in the last few years. The organ has two consoles, one in the Chancel area and another in the rear Gallery. Simon plays on the Chancel console in this video. As Simon plays this energetic number, we also see a few shapshots of the organ case, showing ornate, burnished pipes in the facade, and a shot or two of the busy traffic just outside the Cathedral.

This is one of 16 tracks on the new Pro Organo CD "The Organ at the Met" (Pro Organo CD 7222), which went on sale on August 18, 2008. In the CD, Simon plays classical and modern organ music from European masters. The CD booklet contains complete program notes, and a history of the pipe organ at St Mary's Metropolitan Cathedral, including the complete organ specification of the new Matthew Copley organ. To purchase this CD, or to view Simon's Pro Organo CDs, just visit www.zarex.com/bin and enter the name "NIEMINSKI" in the Search Box.

  • Why not played and uploaded 5/8 by thomas roß :)

  • Thanks for writing. 3 of the 4 Jazz Pieces by Thomas Ross appear on Simon's audio CD "The Organ at the Met," including the lovely "Fuenf Achtel" (5/8). It's a great piece, but this video was done as an "impromptu" bonus during the recording session. We taped only one piece from the CD for YouTube, and we chose to video "Let's Get Rhythm." Best wishes, Frederick Hohman, producer

  • Is this the ONLY piece of music you have on youtube to demonstrate this wonderful instrument? If my church had given money for a brand new organ half as good as this one, I'd be showing off every single part of it, especially when Matthew Copley has provided such a comprehensive spec.

Please can you record some more to share with us?

  • LOVE THIS REAL NICE SOUND JIMMY

  • @latribe oh well, in for a penny and all that... why not suggest Cameron Carpenter or Carlo Curley or someone like that. I have to say, in the area I live I am frowned upon also for thinking that the organ can be used to entertain, in contrast to it's more obvious 'function'. Oh how I wish some people would just lighten up and start enjoying themselves and the music! I'm glad, though that some people havn't forgotten how to do that. There is hope yet!

  • I can hear the Jazz-influences, but i don't hear the typical Jazz-Rhythms (and i don't mean the syncopations, but the jazz-feel, like laid-back, hitting top-notes, muffled or ghost-notes, that kind of thing!). The end is a typical 7#9#11nat13 chord, if my ears don't cheat on me ;-)

  • Magnificent music!

  • Good music.

    That jazzy tunes sound cool.

    Thanks for the post.

  • I like the sound of this organ.

    The jazzy tune sound great.

  • This is so what I like to see!!!! 5 stars! I enjoy to play the church organ in "theatre organ" style.

  • YES, YES, YES. As an organ builder myself, I've been telling people for years that we need to make the king of instruments more relevant to modern listeners, and this is certainly a good start. More music of this nature needs to be written and performed!
