French unions began an open-ended strike Tuesday in protest of pension reforms just days after the Senate approved raising the nation's retirement age from 60 to 62.

The number of participants grew as more protested the hikes than previous strikes in recent months.

Included in the turnout were many refinery workers, raising the possibility of fuel and gas shortages in the country.

Furthermore, instead of ending the strike after 24 hours, the unions chose to now vote on a day-by-day basis whether or not to continue.
