Hip Bumpers started in September 2006 to give older people and the disabled the opportunity to exercise through dancing. It was set up by a group of "groovy grannies" who not only wanted to keep fit in a fun way but also help other people exercise. They wanted to set up other groups to help spread the message of fun and exercise throughout the area. The Hip Bumpers meet weekly and pay £1 to learn new dance routines before socialising over a cup of tea. People who might not leave their homes at night come out make new friends, keep fit and are part of volunteer teams "spreading fun and laughter throughout the area". Hip Bumpers visits care homes, hospitals. The lottery funding enabled Hip Bumpers to set up a website, buy two laptops, printers, a laminator for songsheets, a karaoke machine, a digital camera and a PA system for outside events. The money also went towards costumes and the hire of professional dance teachers so the group can learn a new global dance every month.
