Last thing, he may have had the outward appearance of everything's okay, but that was just a huge facade. He was a tortured soul. He went to alcohol and smoking to ease that pain.
He may have opened the flood, no pun attended, gates open for free agency, but as a human being he was an alcoholic and smoked a lot which killed him. I mean when that case was there no one except some players like Jackie Robinson were behind him. Bob Gibson was behind him, but way way in the shadows. That case destroyed him as a human being. He neglected his kids, wife, and basically ran off to Spain to open a bar. This man was a tortured soul.
The only baseball player to show up at Curt's funeral was Tommy Davis. NO OTHER PLAYERS ATTENDED. He paved the way for so many millions for the players and got bupkiss for his trouble.
It is time all Americans acknowledge Curt Flood is an American hero. His # should be retired along with jackie robinson, but MLB wouldn't fo that in a million years.
@max86max Max, I could not say it better, you have capture the true spirit of Mr. Flood's effort. Curt was one of my dad's favorite players and now I know why. Currently reading book 'A Well-Paid Slave' very good read. This video helps fill the gap on what the book is trying convey.
This man had balls. This man was a gifted and determined athlete, and intellectual and a very talented artist. When I saw Ken Burns Baseball, Kurt Flood and Bill Lee were the most fascinating people interviewed. As far as making an impact in baseball.....I'd have to list, in no particular order, Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, Curt Flood, and Branch Rickey.
A huge thanks to those great people in all walks of life who took a stand, including Curt Flood.
It's a damn crme, pity, and a shame this ste only has 1315 hits!!!! What this man did for these other players should make them ALL get together and build a memorial and send all hs children through college!!
@rtschoolboy I didnt make that comment to tell you that he wasnt looking for money, I made it to say that he didnt envision a contract worth 252 million dollar. He just envisioned a time when the player owns the player, not hte owner owning the player.
On Labor Day 2011, it's good to remember Curt Flood.

All he wanted was players to have control of there own career! He is the reason why there is free agency today. RIP Curt Flood!

@underdog2g3 I realize that. If you have ownership over yourself and become a free agent you now can sell yourself to the highest bidder.
rtschoolboy 1 year ago
@rtschoolboy He didnt fight for the right to earn more money, he fought for the right for a player to have ownership over himself.

How many selfish ego maniac players of today have heard of Curt Flood? My guess is not many. They OWE him.
