1898——1976), the great black African-American performing artist, civil rights and peace activist. Born on April 9, 1898 in Princeton, New Jersey, Paul Robeson, the son of a runaway black slave, became a world-acclaimed artist. He rose to prominence in a time when segregation was legal in America and black people were being lynched by white mobs, especially in the South. Throughout his life, he advocated freedom and equality among all mankind. Robert Robeson was lucky to be blessed with many talents and was all of these: singer, actor, scholar, athlete, social activist, philosopher, linguist, and lawyer. The late concert singer and stage and film actor used his artistic achievement to spread the aspiration for freedom and equality everywhere in the world. In China, the story of Paul Robeson goes deeper and beyond. To Chinese, the late Paul Robeson is more than a Grammy-winning singer and a Hollywood star. He was a friend of China during the turmoil of the WWII and offered his help against the Japanese aggression in the 1930s and 1940s. Robeson sang the songs of the world's people in their own languages. He came to be conversant in 20 languages, and fluent in 12. Paul Robeson was the first foreign singer who sang the Chinese song "Chee Lai" in Chinese in the United States and the world over. This song was written in 1935 by the famous Chinese progressive playwright Tian Han 田汉and it was Nie Er 聂耳the young musician who composed the song. In 1935, the Japanese army occupied the northeast of China and was marching towards North China in an attempt to occupy the whole country. Chinese people were indignant and wanted to unite together to fight against Japanese invasion. It was at that time, "Chee Lai" or "March of the Volunteers" came into being to call on the whole nation to rise up. This exciting and passionate song demonstrates China's national spirit. Paul Robeson first got to know this song in 1941 when the Secretary of the YMCA, Liu Liangmo came to the United States and showed him the song. He recorded it and started to sing it in Chinese. Then in 1941, Liu and Robeson made a. record of several Chinese revolutionary songs including "Chee Lai: Songs of New China". The theme song "Chee Lai" was the theme song of a 1934 Chinese film Chee Lai: Songs of New China" . 保罗·罗伯逊的1941 年版本是先唱国语, 然后英文, 再唱国语, 虽然Paul Robeson 的国语颇为差劲, 但诚意满分, 也是美国推广中国音乐的先锋. Paul Robeson sang the song "Chee Lai" in the US as well as in other countries, all over the world. It was awarded as the best Chinese song at the United Nations on the occasion of marking the victory of anti-fascist war. Robeson promoted this song on the global arena to demonstrate Chinese people's will and national spirit in fighting against Japanese aggression and strive for national independence and liberation. Robeson had made such a great contribution in popularizing this song of the heroic struggle of the Chinese people against fascism to the world, a struggle which was a common struggle of the whole world and mankind. The song has eventually become the national anthem of People's Republic of China. since its the founding. In 1998, Paul Robeson received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, 22 years after his death.

(Paul Robeson 保罗·罗伯逊may have used and written the lyrics meant for the American Negros in his time but they seemed meaningful to modern Chinese people)

Arise! You who refuse to be bound slaves!
Let's stand up and fight for Liberty and true democracy!
All the world is facing
The change of tyranny,
Everyone who wants freedom is now crying:
Arise! Arise! Arise!
All of us in one heart,
With the torch of freedom,
March on!
With the torch of freedom,
March on! March on! March on and on!

  • With the torch of freedom march on. march on march on and on.

  • As much as I hate communism, Paul Robeson was a great and brilliant man, and a great singer.

Communism can plague even the most intelligent and educated minds, and the most ideological people as well.

Communism is as dangerous as Capitalism, educate yourself, the evils of Capitalism are no reason to stray towards the evils of Communism.

  • @dsindc i agree. robeson was duped like many regarding communism. its a clever deception that fools even the educated. he went to rutgers for pete sake and he still fell for the lie of communism. youre right.. i dont think he'd be supportive of it today. if he would be, then he'd really be either obstinate or dellusional. great singer, but politically naive.

  • @nchan1995 sorry my mistake. i meant to write that it "doesnt" mention democracy, not "does". i meant that the ideals of democracy may seem to be in the song to a point, but its a deception. hope that clarifies it .

  • @bigblondman1 what i meant was that the song sounded like it upheld democratic principles but was a deception. i meant to write, the song "doesnt" mention democracy not "does".

  • @nchan1995 personally, i think robeson was a communist sympathizer. the reason he leaned that way, i think was because of the way black were treated here during his life. he felt that the u.s. democracy wasnt addressing true freedom for black people so he embraced a revolutionary concept in protest of the u.s. gov. lack of consideration toward black people. i also think that he simply fell for the deception that is communism. it deceives people with false hope and only benefits the few in charge

  • @heshin117 he was duped by the false appeal communism had on many free thinkers. sure compared to fascim it seemd like a viable alternative. but what they missed was that all communism really does is oppress people after deceiving them and real power isnt with the people but only the few who are in charge. communism is wrong, oppressive and liaes. it benefits no one but the party itself.

  • why would you go to a camp like that at all? it promoted communism which is nothing but deception you and others along with robeson were simply naive or duped into believing that the communists were doing something democratic. thats absurd one has nothing to do with the other. i think robeson would change his mind about the ccp in china today when they recently said to be on gaurd against westernizing, which really means democratizing. china is not democratic if it was the ccp wouldnt be there

  • @Integritube dont be so naive as to fall for the decption that is communism. robeson was veryy intelligent he went to rutgers and even he was deceived by the false hope that communism offered. ill never understnd why he praised it so much. but i think if he was around today he would change his mind after he heard that the ccp warned against westernizing the country and spliting the party. the commies are very insecure and paranoid all they care about is holding onto power by any means necessary

  • @bigblondman1 I was a bit puzzeled about the democracy part because the Original Chinese Lyrics speaks nothing of Democracy.... I don't know where the Democracy came into the song.....
