the masking was actually the easier part. i kind of rebuilt one level of the game in puredata/GEM. gem is a video/openGl extension to the realtime programming environment puredata.
in order to get rid of the background, a pre-set frame without a person inside is taken and the current frame is compared to the 'empty' snapshot. all parts, that are the same, are subtracted and the different parts are left.
