Rajiv Gandhi Mahila Vikas Pariyojna (RGMVP) or the Rajiv Gandhi Mission for Poverty Reduction and Womens Empowerment is the flagship poverty alleviation initiative of the Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust.
Since its inception in 2002, RGMVP reaches out to women in some of the poorest areas of Uttar Pradesh to bring them hope for a better future, a sense of self worth and the means of independence. Empowerment of these women, struggling to survive against adverse economic and social conditions, while achieving poverty mitigation and reduction, lies at the very heart of RGMVPs goals. It aims to achieve its goals by organising women into microfinance-linked Self Help Groups (SHGs) that promote thrift and livelihood enhancement as a means to become self-reliant. These SHGs allow the Mission to reach out to every household, build capacities and social capital, and generate a strong spirit of volunteerism. The SHGs also become conduits for the Mission to achieve social and community development objectives. Institution and capacity building, skills training, SHG-bank linkages, advocacy and networking are important tools in the successful execution of the project.
