(Words & Music by Margaret A. Roche)

I stop to lean
At the entrance to the highway
On the leg of an underpass
And it was there that George caught up with me
We drank his pint of freedom
Down the dream

I invest my soul in company
I bet the big exchange
First of all for love of thee and
Secon'all deranged

There ought to be somethin' to fall back on
Like a knife
Or a career
Oh heavy is the heart
That bears a started life
In the dying time of year
In the dying time of year

I left my pots and plans on the landlord's stove
and was drove down through the Texas heat
Threw my love out in the street

George is colored and I'm white
and George could go for me
George is wonderin' if I might
Go for him

Go to Louisianna
Rockin' a banjo on my knee
After a man that said he'd go for me
George, I'm all gone down the dream
George, I'm all gone down the dream
George, I'm all gone down the dream.

  • one of my favorite songs of all time. no cover will ever match the original. thanks, Maggie and Terre ( and Suzzy).

  • @TheGericsBrothers I'm really glad that you've liked these songs. All credit the the amazing Roche sisters, of course. They aren't even producing this album anymore, so it's never going to get taken down from copyright infringement. Haha! If there's anything you'd like to request, I may be able to accommodate you...

  • it took me HOW long to discover the genius of the word-play that is

",, first of all, for love of thee/and, seconal-deranged.."

what you EXPECT them to sing in the couplet when you hear it ensures you will never hear what they DO sing, until you finally, finally find the lyric sheet that accompanied original release!

Oh, and now can we have "Sex is For Children" from Keep On Doing?

  • Seductive Reasoning is one of the best albums of the 1970s! Love all the songs! A classic. It ought to be reissued!

  • I saw this album on CD on Amazon. I might buy it

  • I just got a usb turntable and this is the first record I am recording I am in the process of downloading now. I was planning in trying to fill the gap in Youtube by offiering a few cuts from the album. I a great tapping of the collective unconcious, you beat me to it. I love this album...love it! Thanks

  • I had a friend back in the 80s who introduced me to this album. It was out of print even back then. Every song on it was incredible. I was lucky enough to find the LP in an older record store and then grabbed it when they released it briefly on CD. I'll never part with either copy!

  • There's a cover? Blasphemy!

  • Thank you for posting! I love this song and have been looking for it online forever. I have only the LP and can't get a CD of it. Thanks so much!

  • can you put up Losing True from Keep On Doing?
