"MAS DULCE QUE LA SANGRE" is a documentary that narrates the story of Carmelo Rodriguez Torres, one of Puerto Rico's most important literary writers today. Carmelo was born on the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico where the U.S. military occupied two thirds of the island and conducted military exercises on that island from the beginning of World War II and finally ending in 2003....all of Carmelo's lifetime. For over a half a century, Carmelo and his people of Vieques endured military assaults from the air, sea and land where millions of pounds of bombs, missiles and mortar rained down devastating the island's environment and the mental and physical health of its people. The military has since left but its presence will be felt for generations to come. Vieques is not only his homeland but also the main character in all his stories.
The winds of war that passed over Carmelo for a lifetime inspired a call to action which is seen, felt, and heard in his prolific writings and storytelling filled with anguish and triumphs. With 5 published books in multiple languages and international successes and literary awards, Carmelo Rodriguez Torres, is an undiscovered genius for his unique writing style. Using his pen as a mighty sword, he fights passionately for Vieques's freedom and writes the words that inspire all people. The "REAL" story of Vieques hasn't been told...yet. This documentary narrates the story of Carmelo Rodriguez Torres, a published Viequense writer and activist that lived the U.S. military's imposition in Vieques since he was 2 years of age and incorporates Vieques into his writings, his teachings and most importantly his life. This is Vieques' story, told through Carmelo Rodriguez's books and life experiences. His writings continue to be a great contribution to the Puertorican culture. Carmelo, "I write because it helps me understand humanity. When I write about Vieques and my people they are about the universal stories of humankind... their loves, their anguish, and their hopes."
