Archuleta shocks audience by saying he might be hit by a car

David Archuleta is almost the opposite of Cook in their speaking abilities. Whereas Cook is always smooth, witty and eloquent, Archuleta struggles to express himself. Cook is a pleasure to listen to, but I often wonder what he's REALLY thinking. Is he just trying to sweet-talk the audience? I have no such issues with Archie. He's like a little kid, innocently saying things without realizing their full meaning. But he's never mean. I've never heard any 17 y/o say "gosh" so much! And in another YouTube video, you can hear him cursing grape skins with "dang." He can't even say "damn." Adorable.

I worry about his maturity. He's too innocent to survive in such a cutthroat business. Even going to college would be tough.

David's nervousness is probably partially the result of a demanding emotionally abusive father. The two were heard arguing, and the father has been barred from the back stages of Star Search and American Idol. Exec Producer Nigel Lythgoe told EW, "we want David to be able to be free like everybody else...let's take some pressure away." No other guardian parent had ever been barred.

Keep in mind that the father is there as a LEGAL guardian -- not as a creative adviser or vocal coach. As such, Jeff is there o make legal decisions not creative ones. When we vote for Archie, we're not voting for Archie and Jeff. Idol provides vocal coaches, and they're limited in what they're allowed to do. Debra Byrd, for example, says that they cannot tell a singer what song to choose. See article below. And note how much more relaxed he is after Idol since his dad is no longer pressuring him about the competition.

Archuleta is known for being painfully shy. Does it make sense then that the 10 y/o would start singing uninvited in a public hotel lobby to the Season 1 contestants? Or to the 9/11 NYC firefighters? Does that sound like a shy 10 y/o? Or did someone pressure him into doing it?

Archuleta's naivete is due, in part, to his overbearing father, who tries to always speak for him. We all remember how embarrassing it is when our parents publicly spoke for us. He has it 10x worse. David has never learned to be independent.

I've thought about Archie a lot because of Michael Jackson's death. Many think that his stage father Joe stunted Michael's emotional growth, which screwed up his psyche. We all know the outcome.

Let's hope that Jeff doesn't also mess up Archie's growth. Those who think Jeff is great guy obviously ignore that he was recently arrested for using a prostitute. Google it for more info.

Jackson never forgave his father, as we saw from his will. I hope Archie and Jeff never reach that point.

I agree 100%. It's clear from eyewitnesses and words of both Nigel Lithgoe and David himself that his father stifles his expression and emotional growth. See my video description.

We need only look at Michael Jackson and his father Joe to see a possible tragic outcome. Jackson was emotionally stunted, and completely screwed up. Jackson never forgave his father, as we saw from his will.

And Jeff was nothing but a source of embarassment and distraction for David in Idol and after. What support??? He used David to live out his own failed career as a musician (not a lot of jobs for a jazz trumpet player in Utah!) and as a source of money.

@smilychickXD Jeff is dirt poor. He asked his ex-wife for child support , which isn't really acceptable in sexist Mormonism. He was a jazz trumpeter who had virtually gigs. Basically, his entire focus was on managing David, whose career is failing -- hence he has little or no income. Supporting his kid? Hardly, unless you say that Joe Jackson also "supported" Michael. It was more like maintaining his sole source of income. David was uspporting Jeff, not the other way around.
